… LORD PENDRY PRESENTS £1M OF FOOTBALL FUNDING
TOWARDS HEYWOOD’S REGENERATION PLAN …
-
A host of Rochdale and Heywood’s dignitaries joined media and local football-mad youngsters on Friday afternoon to see Football Foundation President Lord Pendry officially present £1 million towards the sporting aspect of the area’s £10.3 million regeneration project.
-
Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton Jim Dobbin MP joined Lord Pendry to celebrate the Council’s success in securing the Foundation’s maximum award possible. The Football Foundation is the UK’s largest sports charity, funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government.
-
Also attending the event were Councillor Robin Parker, Mayor of Rochdale Borough, Roger Ellis, Chief Executive of Rochdale Council, Vicki Devonport, Chief Executive of New Heart for Heywood (New Deal for Communities) and Karen Keohane, of Sport England North West.
-
Helping Lord Pendry present the cheque were girls from St Michael’s Church of England School’s Under-11 football team, who will be one of many local teams that benefit from the community’s enhanced sports facilities when the state-of-the-art new site is built.
-
The £1 million grant is the maximum grant that the Football Foundation can award and will go towards a new Sports, Culture and Leisure Village incorporating a sports hall, 25-metre six-lane swimming pool, fitness suite and dance studio, six dual gender changing rooms, two large officials changing rooms, education/community space, a refreshment area and viewing space, spectator and disability-friendly toilet facilities, kitchen and storage areas. There will also be dedicated youth space and a youth gym. The money will also fund enhanced grass pitches, which will be drained, improved and reconfigured to include three full sized pitches, one junior pitch and three Mini Soccer pitches.
-
The new village in Heywood will be built on the site of the existing facilities, and it is designed to offer not only sport, activity and fitness facilities but access to health, skills and learning, as part of New Heart for Heywood’s wider agenda to regenerate Heywood.
-
Karen Keohane said “We were impressed with the scale of the ambitions of the partners to make a real difference to local people, which is why we’ve awarded our largest ever grant for this project”.
-
Building of the new centre is due to begin in spring 2009 with completion in summer 2010, Vicki Devonport, Chief Executive of the New Heart for Heywood Partnership said: “It is great news that the Football Foundation has approved this grant, and it is another major hurdle that has been jumped to make the Sports, Culture and Leisure village a reality, and create a lasting legacy from NDC and its partners. Once the funding is in place for the project to move ahead, the real challenge begins. We look forward to working with partners to put into place structures to ensure that the programme and services delivered from the centre are shaped by the local community, including young people.”
-
Speaking after handing over the cash injection to Rochdale Council and its partners, Lord Pendry said: “The facilities that will be developed here will be amongst the best in the country and are set to lead the development of sport in this part of Greater Manchester.
-
“They are going to be a massive benefit to the area’s youngsters and will really encourage boys and girls to enjoy their football, and other sports and leisure activities and to stay fit and healthy.
-
“The Football Foundation has now made a real difference to the state of the game within our communities. In Lancashire alone the Foundation has invested £11 million into 366 since 2000 and this is also happening in every town and city across the country. Greater Manchester has also had £11 million of investment since the Foundation started.”

Kingsway Juniors

RoFTRA are currently supporting Kingsway Juniors U-12’s football team which is made up with players from areas such as Kirkholt, Balderstone and Turf Hill. We first met with members of the club in the spring of 2008 when they were in the process of actually forming the team, support was provided with an Awards for All application which was successful in achieving just over £2,700.

The team play in the Rochdale & Oldham Sunday League and although some of the results this season have not been too favourable a lot of the performances have been terrific! The coaches are working really hard and are seeing a gradual improvement in the development of their enthusiastic young players.

We will be providing further support in the forthcoming weeks in the guise of Chris Fellows, one of our FA Level 2 coaches, who will deliver some training sessions to the team. We hope that this will not only benifit the players but also give some new and innovative ideas to their (Level One) coaches. We are also in the process of sourcing extra funding to enrol several volunteers from the club on to the FA Level One Coaching Course (times and dates to be confirmed).

Great Manchester Run in aid of CHICKS

National children’s charity CHICKS (Country Holiday for Inner City Kids) is asking for runners to join their team for the Great Manchester 10K Run on Sunday 17th May 2009. In the past 3 years, CHICKS has provided hundreds of disadvantaged children from the North West with a respite break at their retreats in Devon & Cornwall. CHICKS plan to give free breaks to 1,000 children per year by 2010 but as the charity receives no government funding, events like the Great Manchester Run play a big part in funding the respite breaks.

If you would like to join our team and help raise money for this very worthy cause, plus receive information about Volunteering opportunities at our centres or events such as the overseas trek to Venezuela, please contact Fundraiser Mick Ryan on 01822 811020 or e-mail mick@chicks.org.uk

Matt Keen from Sale who ran for CHICKS in 2008 said: "I ran in the Great Manchester run in 2008 to raise both awareness and funds forCHICKS. It was the combination of a well organised and uplifting event with a wonderful, caring charity organisation. In fact, the whole day was so inspiring. So much so, I have entered again this year to continue my link with the CHICKS organisation. I even have to overcome a knee injury in time to run, which is nothing compared to what some of the children have to endure! I know I can make it to the finish line and, in doing so,help to make a real difference to the lives of young people. Perhaps my aches and pains aren't that bad after all?"

CASE STUDY: Andrew lives at home and has 4 brothers and sisters who are in care. He is on the Child Protection Register having been subjected to emotional abuse and neglect. Andrew’s family are very impoverished and he has few opportunities to get involved with constructive activities. Andrew has very low self esteem and finds it difficult to make friends at school as he can be irritating to other children. Having a hearing impediment and wearing a hearing aid makes life very hard for him.

Sport & Play Sessions Launched

A new partnership between Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, RoFTRA and RADPAC has led to the piloting of new combined Sport and Play sessions over the February Half Term. RBH, who have funded the initiative, where keen to support the delivery of new activities for children and young people residing on their estates across the Borough. As a result, the RoFTRA Community Sports Team and RADPAC (who deliver a range of play services) teamed up to deliver joint sessions, where children and young people aged 5-14 years where able to turn up and take part in either sport or play based activities. This has helped overcome issues for many families who have struggled to find provision for siblings whose ages have previously been too broad to attend the same activities.

The sessions were delivered at four different venues (Harwood Park School in Heywood; Belfield Primary School in Rochdale; Hollin Primary School in Middleton; and Greave Community Base in Rochdale), with two-hour, daily sessions being held at each venue from Monday to Friday. Over 190 different children and young people attended the activities, with Harwood Park School being phenomenally successful attracting 110 participants alone!

Due to its success, the scheme will be repeated over the first week of the Easter Holidays (Monday 6th April- Thursday 9th April) at the following venues:

- Turf Hill Initiative Centre, Neston Road, Rochdale

- Little Heaton Primary School, Boardman Lane, Rhodes, Middleton

- Woodlands Primary School, Regent Street, Heywood

- Moorhouse Primary School, Crossley Street, Milnrow

Daily sessions are available at each venue between 1:30-3:30pm for children and young people aged 5-14years. The sessions are free of charge, and to take part all you need to do if turn up on the day. Please note, places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. For further information, please contact either Janine or Rob on 01706 764810.
